hand tinted photographs

When our ancestors wanted a colored photograph the photographer just painted over a black and white print.

You could still buy a set of spirit based tinting dyes in the 1950ies, and you can get a similar effect in Photoshop Elements 4 by setting a brush tool to say 11% transparent and just play about

the old film was over sensitive to blue hence the white sky and under sensitive to red and yellow so that looked black or dark grey like the barrel - obviously this is a work in progress and you could do a lot with these children like the portrait photogrpahers of those days did before the invention of color film.

The smudge tool is my favourite for a quick fix of old photos, it works like a dirty finger on a drawing made with charcoal or chalk or a BBB pencil.
